Polperro, South Coast
Polperro is one of Cornwall's most picturesque fishing villages, with narrow winding streets, traditional whitewashed cottages and a beautiful harbour tucked between steep green hillsides. Situated on the south coast between Looe and Fowey, the village has retained much of its historic character and is a popular destination for visitors looking to experience traditional coastal Cornwall.
At the heart of Polperro is its small working harbour, where fishing boats rest alongside the quays and colourful cottages overlook the water. The surrounding streets are filled with independent shops, galleries, cafés and traditional pubs, while the village's fishing and smuggling history adds to its distinctive atmosphere.
Visitors can discover more about Polperro's past at the village's Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing, which explores the lives of local fishermen and the area's colourful maritime history. The narrow lanes and historic buildings also make Polperro an enjoyable place to explore on foot, with plenty of opportunities to stop for refreshments or admire the harbour views.
The South West Coast Path passes through the village, offering spectacular walks along the surrounding cliffs. The route east towards Talland Bay and Looe is particularly attractive, with secluded coves and beautiful coastal scenery, while heading west leads towards quieter stretches of coastline and the village of Lansallos.
Polperro is largely traffic-free in its historic centre, helping to preserve its traditional character. Visitors generally park at the edge of the village and continue on foot towards the harbour.
With its maritime heritage, sheltered harbour and beautiful coastal setting, Polperro is a wonderful place to explore while visiting south-east Cornwall.
