St Mawes, Roseland Peninsula, South Coast

St Mawes is a picturesque harbour village on the Roseland Peninsula, overlooking the sheltered waters of the Carrick Roads and the entrance to the Fal estuary. Known for its beautiful coastal setting, colourful waterfront and relaxed atmosphere, the village is a popular destination for sailing, seaside walks and exploring this quieter corner of south Cornwall.

The village centres around its attractive harbour, where small boats and yachts sit at anchor against a backdrop of traditional cottages, waterfront cafés and restaurants. Narrow streets lead away from the harbour towards independent shops and peaceful residential lanes, while the surrounding coastline offers wonderful views across the water towards Falmouth.

One of St Mawes' best-known landmarks is St Mawes Castle, an impressive Tudor artillery fortress built by Henry VIII to defend the entrance to the Fal estuary. Situated a short walk from the village centre, the castle offers fascinating history and spectacular views across the Carrick Roads towards Pendennis Castle on the opposite shore.

St Mawes also has several small beaches, including Summers Beach, which is popular with families and offers sheltered waters and lovely views across the estuary. Passenger ferries connect the village with Falmouth, making it easy to enjoy a day exploring the town's shops, maritime attractions and waterfront without travelling by car.

Beyond the village, the Roseland Peninsula is known for its peaceful countryside, attractive coastal villages and beautiful walking routes. Nearby places to explore include Portscatho, St Just in Roseland and the scenic coastline around St Anthony Head.

With its combination of maritime character, historic attractions and beautiful estuary scenery, St Mawes is an excellent destination for discovering the Roseland Peninsula.
