Cornish Villages You Should Explore This Spring
Spring is one of the most rewarding times to explore Cornwall’s smaller coastal villages. The days are brighter, the paths are quieter, and there’s a real sense of space before the summer season begins.
If you’re looking for peaceful walks, good food, and proper local character, here are three Cornish villages well worth discovering this spring.
🌊 Porthallow, The Halfway Point of Adventure
Tucked away on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula, Porthallow is a peaceful village with a big claim to fame, it marks the halfway point of the South West Coast Path. There’s even a marker on the beach denoting this milestone, making it a popular photo spot for walkers. The Five Pilchards Inn is a great spot for food and drink, right next to the beach, and they often host community events and music evenings.
The shingle beach looks out across Falmouth Bay, and in spring it’s often blissfully quiet. From here, coastal walking in either direction is superb:
- Head south towards Coverack for dramatic cliffs and wildflower-lined paths.
- Walk north towards Nare Point and the Helford estuary for gentler, rolling views.
It’s a fantastic base for anyone planning a walking holiday, step out of the door and straight onto the coast path.
We've got excellent options for anyone looking to stay in this beautiful cove:
- Bank Cottage - a proper Cornish Cottage for up to five, right by the beach, with sea views and a patio looking right across the beach.
- Little Scol Garth - a spacious cottage for two, up above the cove with a lovely garden, and access to the coast path nearby.
🌿 Gweek, Wildlife and Riverside Wanders
Set at the head of the Helford River, Gweek is a relaxed village surrounded by creeks, woodland and wildlife. In spring, the riverbanks are teeming with life, birds nesting, flowers emerging, and the first warmth returning to the air.
While you’re here, you can:
- Explore the creeks and riverside footpaths.
- Visit the Cornish Seal Sanctuary – open year-round and always a lovely stop for families.
- Enjoy a meal or a pint at The Black Swan – a welcoming village pub with a cosy feel.
- Pick up fresh pasties, local supplies or even an ice cream from the excellent village shop.
It’s a brilliant spot for a 'slower stay', especially if you enjoy wildlife and waterside scenery.
Our charming cottages in Gweek:
- Gweek Lodge - a beautiful thatch cottage for up to three. this Grade II listed cottage was originally one of two gatehouses to the historic Trelowarren Estate, and is one of the most photographed buildings in the area. Only a few yards from the head of the Helford River.
- Pear Tree Cottage - a stone-built cottage right in the centre of the village, complete with large garden and patio for those balmy afternoons. Just a few door up form the village store and over the road from the lovely pub, so you can immerse yourself in village living.
⚓ Coverack, A Thriving Seaside Village
Coverack combines traditional fishing-village charm with a lively, welcoming atmosphere. Its wide sandy beach is perfect for spring walks, and the historic harbour still sees small boats landing fresh catches.
In the village you’ll find:
- Cafés and restaurants serving fresh seafood and seasonal dishes.
- A well-stocked community shop with everything from daily essentials to fresh local goods.
- Direct access to the coast path for longer rambles along the Lizard’s rugged coastline.
Just a short drive away is Roskilly's – ideal for lunches, evening meals, Sunday roasts or a scoop (or two) of their famous ice cream. The surrounding countryside is dotted with galleries showcasing local art, adding another layer to a spring visit.
Our seaside cottages in Coverack:
- Smugglers Rest - a traditional seaside cottage overlooking Coverack’s picturesque harbour, with sea views from both bedrooms.
- Trevean - a perfectly positioned bungalow with hillside views over the sea and bay below, just a short walk to Coverack's beach and village centre.
Why Spring is the Perfect Time
These villages truly shine before the height of summer. You’ll find:
- Easier parking and quieter paths
- Space to linger in cafés
- Fresh coastal air without the holiday crowds
- Wildflowers beginning to line the coast
If you’re planning a coastal escape, spring offers the chance to experience Cornwall’s villages at their most authentic, full of character, community spirit and natural beauty.
